Wetlands and Biodiversity
Five of the projects under this theme explore the economy-wetlands inter-linkages through case studies from across the country. Another four projects attempt valuation of Protected Areas or forests. A range of valuation methods are used by the case studies in various parts of India. Analysis of primary and secondary data, results and policy implications should be of great value.
Urban wetlands
Wetlands located in the urban areas provide a range of economic and ecological services to the society. The importance and contribution of the urban wetlands in the sustenance of the urban agglomerations is often not appreciated and understood. EERC funded four projects under this theme viz. East Calcutta wetlands, Bhoj wetland in Bhopal, Yamuna river in Delhi and Lake Nainital in Himalayas. The fifth project tries to link the interactions between degradation of several water bodies and wetlands and economic development in the state of West Bengal.
Protected area Economics
Four projects, examine the protected area-economics interface in the context of Gir forests, Bhitarkanita mangroves and Pench National Park and the forests in Western Ghats.
